X5 Selector Position Switch Replacement?

So for the past few months my X has been acting a little odd in that at times (now all of the time) i cant get it to park when its in park (transmission wise it is) ...

This of course means that it does not start in park - handy and nice i figured this out on the side of the road in traffic ...

Over time i have noticed that it also now has issues if i switch to N to start.

It also will flash up the sport gears at times when i move between park and drive and back and forth.

It will show an error of "Trans Fail Safe" if i have the car running, go into drive - then park - and drive again so i have been using N when i stop.

Some poking around shows that the recal was done back in 2001 "bmw x5 A/T Selector Position Switch Replacement" ... but from what i read it looks very close to the same issues.

Can someone tell me what part this is, if any cleaning can be done now to get my by until i can get to this and the location of the part? I have found some information but nothing all that solid.

any help would be great.

I have the codes if needed and the position of P and N pulled form CarSoft.

If there was a recall out for this issue, take it to the stealership and let them fix the recall free of charge. In issuing a safety recall, by law any licensed BMW dealership must make the repair at no cost to you whether you take it in the day the recall is issued (assuming parts availability) or if you bring it in 50 years down the road with 3 million miles on the clock.

I had checked with the dealer - it was already replaced and now doing the same thing. It was replaced back in 2002. They want $480 for the part so im just wondering what part number it is / how hard it really is to put in.
