Grinding noise at startup fixed
So my 2003 4.4i has 84K miles and it started to make a grinding noise after startup, it was a half second squeal after the auto start. My buddy says that noise is the starter motor, and so I ordered a brand new one from rock auto for ~90 shipped it was like TYC brand. No core by the way. Took him 2 hours, take off the skid plate, and reaching up and finding the one bolt which I needed a 12mm torx socket (picked up for $4 at advanced auto parts). Now the new one there was a slight interference on the black rubber thing so he had to "shave it a bit" Not sure if Bosch brand is more to spec. It looks like a black plastic 1" rectangle on the starter motor next to the bolts and nuts. He was able to blindly torque back that bolt way up there in a few tries. Make sure to disconnect the battery before doing so. He charged me $160, plus 90 for motor i bought, total $250. No more embarassing noise and damage to the flywheel. Hope this helps some people with idea and cost if they have similar issue.
