Knock noise after CV boot replace X5 2005

I just changed out my front/outer CV boot on my 2005 X5. It turned out this was a little easier than I thought since I used the method of just removing the bolts from the strut to get the axle out instead of removing the ball joints.

Before I replaced the boot, I had no symptoms other than the grease. No odd sounds from the joint. But, after I replaced the boot, I am getting a knocking sound when I hit a bump. The knock does not seem to be associated with the turning of the axle since I do not hear any knock while driving straight down the road. Also, I do not hear any knock if I turn the wheel. The only time I hear the knock is when I hit a bump, even a small bump.

I have not taken the time to pull this apart to look at it again. I am trying to figure out what the problem is before I tear everything apart. I have a feeling that it might be the CV joint but I don't know why it would knock now when it was not knocking before.

The knock is in sync with the 'bouncing' of the car and not the rolling/turning of the axle if that make any sense to anyone. I am hoping this is some kind of loose bolt but I only had to unbolt a few of them and I am certain that they are tight.

During the cleaning of the CV joint, I did not intend to take it apart but some of the bearings popped out and I had to clean and reassemble. I am pretty certain that I put that back together correctly. I assume these is only one way to put that back together or it would not work right.
Any thoughts?

Check the sway bar link to ensure it is tight first. They loosen up and moving the strut out of the way may have done just enough to make it 'clunk' now.

You were right. I got under the car and could see the nut was backed off about 1/4". I tighten up that nut and 90% of the noise is gone. I still hear a random/similar noise but maybe I am being overly sensitive.

Those things always seem to loosen up over time. Don't know why...

Glad I was able to help.
