Why do some vehicles have rear footwell lighting and some dont?

Alright so I did search and have wondered about this for a while. Why do some facelifted X5s have footwell lighting in the rear, by that I mean lighting right below the rear seat, and some only have it on the underside of the door?

My '02 has them. I actually went on a manhunt searching for a part # because I was missing one of the clear covers and ended up finding it @ BMW of Westchester. Parts rep told me that this was a "added option". Very convenient having them if you ask me.

My '02 has them as well. Maybe part of the premium package?

Thats so weird. I kind of like the way it looks but the was wondering if it is an add on option maybe for retrofitting.

it's part of auto dimming mirrors option on top of premium. also comes with lit door handles and individual reading lights for rear. I wired two extra under front seats

Comfort lighting option - also includes external downlighters in undersides of door mirrors to light the ground near the front doors. They operate with interior lights (except when the car is moving).
