Just a couple of weeks ago I chanced not topping up, thought I could just make it home after a long trip. Aproaching Bristol on a motorway, the range started dropping dramatically after reporting about 7 miles so I started driving as economically as possible and took the first off-ramp on ----- miles (sinking feeling). To cut a long story short, I drove 10 miles further with the lightest foot on the peddle while desparately trying to find a filling station in an unfamiliar area. Nerve-racking, but useful to know there is a reasonable reserve when you think you are done!

I too have seen the ---- on the display & also drove for around 10mi. Not a very good feeling. I put 24.1 gallons in to the first click. I never top off but I'm sure I could have gotten several more tenths in there.

I knew I had a pic of running on fumes, aka --- on the gas gauge readout.
From a trip to NJ this past summer for our Granddaughter's b'day.
Pic was taken after we pulled up to the gas pump.
