I am currently (again) a very unhappy X5 driver. My 2002 X5 3.0D has 170 000 kms (105 633 mi) on and I have had to replace the gearbox, the turbo and the front diff since it came out of motorplan at 120 000 kms (74564 mi). I'm up to about R70 000 (about $10500) in repairs. Firstly, is this normal X5 behaviour? Secondly, my X broke down three weeks ago and said "FUEL INJECT SYTEM" and wouldn't start. The mech now tells me I need a new High Pressure Diesel Pump on the engine. The stealers want R30 000 (almost $5000) for a new one. Can these be reconditioned? If so, by who? Im really at wits end here. Im in the mood to sell it as soon as its fixed and NEVER touch another BMW again. Can someone advise or console me here? |

Dont let this put you off BMW...loads of happy 3.0D owners here, including myself and I work on them everyday Looks like you been unlucky and the cost of repairs and parts in your country ,are well over the top. Usd10.500 for gearbox, turbo, front diff,is way higher than dealer prices here for supplying and fitting all.! Usd5000.00 for a fuel pump is daylight robbery!Price here at the dealers is about usd 1200.00.Try and find a diesel specialist to fix your pump.If indeed it is the pump!Normally its just the rail fuel pressure sensor that commonly fails! Because your car is 8 years old,you should be looking at parts off a salvage vehicle for example or reconditioned parts. The gearbox is the only part ,you shouldnt cut corners on!The front diff is not very expensive and the a new turbo(outside dealer) is below usd 1000.00 and you could have got a Garret repair kit for that for less than usd400.00 all fitted and balanced!170,000 kms is about right for turbo repair and maintenance but not for outright replacement, unless something broke due "unusual "circumstances! |
