so I was going down the road today and it hit me - my X rides a lot ruffer than it did when I first got it. Could this be the suspension needing some work? I've ordered some new tires and the ones I have now are pretty bald, could this be the problem?

It's because of the bald tires. Shorter the tread, less it's going go flex on impacts absorbing less. Also, I'm pretty sure, new tread on top is softer.

Definately having tires with very little tread left will have a negative effect on the ride quality. I'd start with putting on the new tires before doing anything with the suspension.

Tires will make a world of a difference.
Get new tires before you alter suspension, but that's already been said.
