Anyone know where to get a 4.4i Alternator?

Ok, I have had the worst luck with this dang thing. Short story- 150 amp water cooled Alternator for the 4.4i 2001. Where and How much I am Trying to stay under/around 250. I know that some places are asking 500 but im sorry I dont have that kind of cash right now. I just spent 200 in the water pump, thermostat , and all necessary parts thinking that was the problem when in actuality it was the Alternator Why does BMW have to have a water-cooled Alternator for a freaking SAV? It makes no sense.

One person In this thread Thinking of buying a 2001 740il - Bimmerforums - The Ultimate BMW Forum said he got an OEM rebuilt water cooled alt with a lifetime warranty from Autozone.

Of equal importance is what else was said "These cars are not cheap to own."

That said.... I would plan on spending 200-500 a month in continuing maintenance to drive it. They are luxury sport SAV's and expect to be treated as such. If you don't keep it up with the proper parts it will eat you alive. The best thing might be to sell it and get something you can afford until you're in a better position financially.

Check eBay, I've seen a used working one going for around $200; caveat they are not rebuilt ones, most are taken from 740i but seller claims they are in working order.

I thought most of the times, the regulator is the one broken, so maybe if you can search around to see if you can rebuild it yourself.

Try this thread. Novastar is no longer, but there are other leads in there.

Try here: Parts Bin - Auto Parts and Accessories Catalog - Alternator

and if you decide to purchase from here use this code at checkout: JUMPSTART for a $15 dollars off credit.

Good luck with the search.

Novastar would have been the icing to my cake... I have been searching on where they went because it was a company of 100-500 employees, It couldn't have just fallen of the face of the earth. The cheapest i have found one is 389 with 153 core.

The whole reason it went out was that the coolant was leaking out of the truck without me knowing and it ran dry for about 10 mins. Then all the sudden.... SKREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEECCCCCHHHHHHH and it died. Tried to start it back up same story skreech and die. thought it was the water pump but i just got that off and realized the alt was water cooled and try to spin the pully and sure enough... It was really difficult to turn and was making a clanking noise inside the casing. I believe this was the problem so.. After i sell my Ford i will be able to spend ample amounts on to fixing this myself.

@QuickSliver I can Afford to fix it I just wanted to do it without spending the 500 for a new alt. I bought the 2001 4.4 with 100k miles for $5,000 So don't start Saying what i can and cannot afford, You have no idea who i am or what i do for a living. Your intolerance for people that you think are new to the community is not seen as a welcome but more like a grumpy old man telling you to get off his lawn.

Thank you to all that have posted. Great information before making the plunge into a new alt.

And since you joined in November 2010, it seems a reasonable conclusion that you are new to the community.
