Finnally Dropped off the X5 at the Tranny shop
quick intro..i have a 04 x5 4.8is silver 116k with the two tone suede interior (is it suede) but i have been having tranny isues for a while. The other day on the highway it wouldnt go into 6th gear and i couldnt switch the shifter over to manual.. when i tried it did nothing.also i have the hooting noise before it changes gear some times, and also when im slowing down to a stop its almost like i have to wait an extra second for it to down shift, cuz if i dont it would lunge forward when i hit the gas i gess maybe slamming into gear. well what should i have them do when its there should i do a flush and filter or is that wasting my money. and also where is the best place to get a remanufactured transmission, i cant sem to find one. any help would be great and if i knew how to post pics i would.

the tranny shop tellls me that i need axles cuz they are shot and could be causing the tranny to do funny things and my plugs are misfiring and i need a tune up.. how come i never had the check engine light on?well thats where they tell me they want to start. Are all these things related? come on fellow BMW enthusiasts somebody chime in with some answers. please

axles have nothing to do with causing the tranny to malfunction. you might hear a grinding, clunking or clicking noise but they will not cause the tranny not to shift. 116K is due time for plugs if they are the originals. is this a bmw specific shop? if not, you might want to check into a reliable bmw indy. sounds like you have the typical roasted X5 transmission. replacements are anywhere from $3000-$5000.

Its a tranmission shop. and i asked them to do the fluid and trans filter and he says its a sealed unit and lifetime fluid and its not leaking so why would i change the fluid, and noone would do it..really seems like lots of people on here do it. also he says the book time per axle is 4 hours. does that sound right? his reasoning behind the axles and transmission messing up is he says the whole car is run by electronics and when one thing is out of whack it throws everything off the these vehicles, I know i needed axles cus the boots were leaking but if they were both broken like he said. wouldnt i have felt it when i driving the car....also i needed coil numbers 7 and 2 and new plugs, and he thinks thats why its shifting improperly.
well needless to say i know i needed axles and a tune up so i did choose to do these anyways, but i find it hard to believe these new parts will make my tranny any different. i guess i just hope he is right. does anyone know where to get a good remanufactured tranny for a x5 4.8is |

Pull your truck out asap. Find a tranny shop that deals with zf transmissions. That clunking is the tranny. I don't know where in ct u are but one member had his tranny rebuilt at amco in east Hartford. Might want to call and find out about their experience zf trannies. Member was tonycajjo.

4 hours per axle?! Thats a joke. Go get your baby of there and find a BMW professional.

Not being able to shift the tranny to manual sounds more like a TCM problem than the tranny itself. The transmission control module does the switching in conjunction with the shifter and some internal tranny sensors. I would get someone to trouble shoot the drivetrain properly before throwing your money out blindly. Our tranny was shifting erratically all the time and going into Transmision fail safe mode sporadically. It was the DSC module. I removed the module and performed repairs myself and have had no problems since. (four months ago) Just so you know (the dealer automatically said it was the transmission) and that I would need to replace it. I think what most dealers do is... just replace the most expensive part, then find the problem after that. (work down hill) Be carefull.... There are a lot of things that can go wrong electrically and mimic a mechanical failure.
Good luck. |

no i actually paid for 4 hours maybe i misunderstood him. well either way i got 2 axles and a tune up for 1600. and still the same problems. Unreal i guess u live and learn, its only because my mechanic who always does all my work hast called me back in 5 weeks. dont know why..so i guess im goingt to try to get ahold of the tranny place someone mentioned earlier. heres the thing it drives fine in manual mode, only when its shifting for itself does it make the hooting noise right when i hit the gas hard then it will downshift rightafter it goes up a gear, am i better of just replacing the transmission instead of paying 1.3 million dollars to diagnose it

Not to sound rude, but while I understand your frustrated, you must realize that the forum members did advise you that those repairs didn't seem related to the problem at all..
I'm confident a BMW professional could diagnose your problem accurately within an hour, maybe two at the most. so, your talking a couple hundred dollars diag time. I think it may be worth it. To hear you describe the problem it does sound like an internal transmission problem but I would have it diagnosed just to be sure. Has anyone even checked the fluid level/quality? Any faults stored in Mechatronics module? -Ben |
