Timing Chain

Has anyone done changed the timing chain on the 4.4 M62 engine ? Bentley manual doesn't cover it.

What's involved ? Difficult job ?

Never heard of the is repair being necessary. All I did on my e39 4.4 was replace the timing rail tensioner. This was at 112K miles. Cheap and easy repair. Are you having issues?

Well I am getting a faint knocking noise from the engine under acceleration. Was thinking it could be VANOS as I know they have a tendency to become noisy. Also I put Mobil1 in recently and I've heard these knocking sounds reported by others when they did they same. Then I thought timing chain. There's 110k miles on the clock and I've only driven about 10k of them so I don't know if the chain was ever done. I have also heard that the timing chain doesn't need to be done on these, and maybe that explains why the Bentley manual doesn't cover it while other engines are covered in the same manual. Still I'm wondering why the chain doesn't need doing on the M62.

when VANOS starts It's rattle It's fine. If you still want to take sound off, you need to change whole VANOSes. don't know about knock though

Check your oil grade. I had a similar problem with an e46.

Replaced the whole chain and adjusting units before fixing it by changing the oil grade

Turned out the N42 engine in it is VERY particular about what oil is used.

Start there...cheapest place to start.
