Has anyone see DIY for rear wheel bearing?
the X5. The wheel bearing is in a housing connected with 4 Torx bolts and is about $95. Local Indy wants $200 for labor. Looks like a straightforward job to remove wheel, disc rotor and then unbolt the bearing. Anyone seen a DIY writeup or have done this repair?? thanks in advance! |

I've done it. I would suggest you pay for the labor unless you have lots of tools laying around( I do). Difficult job to say the least. See if you can find a socket that will fit on those torx bolts. You won't, you have to grind it down thin wall and use one hell of an extension. If your indy can do it for 2 bills I would jump on it. That job is tougher than it looks (or you can do it in your mind). Good luck either way.

Thanks for the advice!
Yeah, we got as far as getting the axle nut off after heating it up with
a torch. I saw that the bearing had the torx bolts reversed from the back. We gave up and this am I going to the Indy shop. What were you're symptons?? |

From what me and the wife can recall there was a deep whir-whir-whir noise coming from the rear of the X. In fact, I can recall her and I debating which side it was coming from. To solve this I jumped in the back (cargo) and we went for a drive. She was right (figures) drivers side rear when I stuck my ear to the floor. Been a looong time ago looking at records, I replaced this at 65K miles, 3/05. At the time I bought both but just replaced the one side. Where at 157K now no issues.

Also, I kind of wonder if your indy knows what he's getting into. Book time?? This is not as easy as any other BMW rear wheel bearing.
