Fuel Gauge inaccurate! Ran out of gas in the middle of the freeway!

Ran out of gas in the middle of the freeway yesterday morning due to an inaccurate fuel gauge!

The needle was pointing in the middle of the 1/4 line and empty (0) line. Does this mean it's already empty??? Well apparently mine meant exactly that.



Is there a way to recalibrate the fuel gauge? Do I have to change the fuel tank float? By the way this is a BRAND NEW Instrument cluster from the BMW Dealer/Shop - paid around $700 for it

By the way, the instrument cluster is in German language - there was a German word flashing everytime I started and killed the engine I think it was "prufen chennl" or something like that. Does that mean check your gas or gauge level?

Going back to my freeway mishap, I was lucky enough that there were 2 cigarette vendors who offered to push the X5 to a Shell gas station 100 meters from where I stopped. When I filled it up, the X started without difficulty. So the tank was really empty...I suppose...?
