Unhappy VANOS Solenoids N62 Engine - Issues

Hi there.

I am new to Xoutpost, but not new to X5s. I currently own a 2005 4.4i which I've had for a while now, almost 3 years. Just yesterday it started behaving oddly. After starting it, it went fine for a few minutes and then started to hiccup and the engine light began to flash (10 flashes then a gap, then repeated). I went home immediately but when I got there all the issues stopped seemingly.

However, in fact it had lost low end power and there was a distinct "lag" when the accelerator depressed before popping into real life. Using PASoft, I found 2 codes that worried me

2A83 Intake VANOS and 2A84 Intake VANOS. Looking these up it seems that this refers to each bank and the intake VANOS solenoid/system. The fact that there's lag suggests a faulty or clogged solenoid.

Odd that this happened simultaneously on both banks and that the exhaust ones are not throwing any errors...

Happy to remove and clean (replacing o rings) first and then if necessary replace, but the fact both intake solenoids threw the same error at the same time makes me wonder...

Any thoughts or insights?

Roger

VANOS Solenoids N62 Engine - Issues

They operate on oil pressure. If the oil is the wrong viscosity or the pump isn't providing enough pressure could cause a systemic problem

Andrew, thanks. I am aware that they work on oil pressure. I was figuring on purchasing an oil pressure gauge to check it. Haven't at this point. The oil is the recommended 0-30 fully synthetic and this has not changed since I got the vehicle. I agree this may be more system wide, but if it was oil pressure, wouldn't;t the exhaust solenoids/system throw the same error?

Could easily be just in the way the intake v exhaust are supplied. Since both sides are affected I would expect something that affects both to be at fault. Most likely means oil pressure related somehow

Fair comment Andrew and thanks. I must say that when both went at the same time it did seem more than just a dodgy solenoid. I will look into it before shelling out on o rings and/or solenoids. Of course, if the oil pressure is low, then I've got an entirely different problem on my hands...

Could be low from being low or sorry etc. Too low or high of viscosity.

VANOS Intake on both banks - SOLVED

Andrew, thanks for your assistance here. It got me thinking and that's the main thing. I cross referenced a number of articles on rough idle, hiccups and lack of power and found several references to the IVM. After extracting it, it does indeed have solder issues, and though I am not in a position to do a "proper job" on it, I did re-solder the four connections highlighted and it cured the problem - albeit temporarily due to my way under powered soldering iron and lack of solder cleaning skills... It is this relay box of course that relays the solenoids amongst other things including the ignition coils, injectors and servos.

So it's a new IVM for me. On its way now - with me tomorrow.

Hopefully that'll put an end to this and I can clean the solenoids at the weekend and check them out just in case...
