shimmy in tires and a little in steering wheel

Hello All,

I am new to BMW and to the forum as well. My recently purchased 2002 X5 3.0i sport has a little shimmy in it. Sometimes it is more noticeable at certain speeds. I was going to bring it to Tires Plus to do a tire rotation and balance to see if that is the problem, but looking at other threads I'm not sure I sure rotate them. It seems to track alright so I'm not sure if I should do the alignment as well. The truck has 100,000 miles on it and the tires are getting down there. Any words of wisdom would be greatly appreciated. Thanks everyone!

-The Manual does not rec'd tire/wheel rotation; a few posters here do it, side to side, but I would take a Pasadena on rotation.
-"tires are getting down there", is pretty vague; worn tires have wear patterns and balance is often affected/eroded over time, on worn tires, which may lead to an unbalanced tire(s) situ.

Doubt I would bother with a 're-balance' on worn tires. If your tires are worn, a new set of fresh rubber and a careful balance job should cure your ills. Tire Joints using Hunter balance equip seems to be the preferred standard. I would also have them do a wheel spin, off car, to check for wheel dents, wheel eccentricities, etc., with tire(s) off wheel(s).

Any 'good' tire joint that caters to performance cars should be able to do a thorough and satisfactory job.

-Alignment: some posters here feel one has to do an alignment with new tires; I've never done an alignment on our '01, in 10 yrs/78k miles, as I don't bounce off curbs, but YMMV.
