Nice one Steve, well done mate. Mine were all shot like that too. It all feels tight again like a new car, yes? No clunking 'tranny' issues (well at least I thought I had) anymore. I hope you're chuffed with yourself, and at the least much happier driving the beast now!

No idea. Like I said in my first post, I used aftermarket bushes, and I didn't make a note of the part no. If you want to buy from BMW the part no is 33316770454.

Rear of the car, and that stopped the thumping from beneath?

Mine sounds like its in the front.

Thanks for the part numbers I'll inspect my rear. I have about 112K miles
on the car and I'm sure things need to start getting replaced. I'll start another thread.

Cheers!

VM

I am curious as to the mileage as well. I am at 88k mi right now on original rear bushings and considering a change, though no major symptoms yet.

Also, did you get an alignment afterwards?

What is the tell-tale sign the bushings need to be replaced? I'm hearing a creaking sound in the suspension with all this cold weather, especially from the rear down low in the wheel well areas - not the tailgate, that's a different sound. I have 112K miles, time to replace?

Was that question to me ? Mine has 108k miles on it and the bushes looked original, but they'd also clearly been bad for a long time. I'd say anything from 80k miles upwards it would be worth having a look at them.

The main symptom I had was a creak or clonk when pulling away or when going on/off the throttle at low speed. The whole subframe would be rotating slightly as a torque reaction to the wheels.

I changed mine at 100k miles.

As for the 'symptoms', I had a thumping sound from the rear when the 'box changed gear, more noticeably when changing down, and particularly at around the 20-10mph mark (2nd gear to 1st). The thumping sound in both conditions (upshift and downshift) could only be heard at low speeds though..between 10-30mph.

Like sundayjumper's, mine were shot too, completely broken (metal part completely detached from the rubber), and looked like they were like that for some time also.

Its worth checking them out gents, its completely changed how the car feels now.

As for the creaking sound msammy, I have seen other threads saying that sound possibly relates to the upper control arm. Perhaps have a look at that while you're there...
