M62 owners please check in - timing chain guide poll

I'm doing some research on timing chain guide failure rates and hoping you guys would be so kind as to answer this poll.

Please answer only if you own/previously owned an E53 with an M62 motor... M62B44 (4.4) or M62B46 (4.6).

Hopefully this will help narrow down the failure rates.

Thank you!

Looks like I butchered the 4th poll option, it should say 125-150k.

Can a mod help a dyslexic dude out?

Over 170k miles, still OE guides. BMW did all service up to 100k, after that all oil changes have been done when the 3rd green light goes out, M[1] 0-40 LL spec.

EPDARKS, you might want to instruct posters to include climate where their X is used. I would think extreme thermal cycling (sub zero to operating temp) shortens the life of ALL hard plastc parts.

Hot climate, FL and TX X for over 10 yrs.

Thanks, TiAg,

There are probably a lot of factors worth thinking about:

Climate
City or highway usage
Short trips? (lots of cold starts)
Driving style (easy or aggressive)
Warm up methods
Oil used
Frequency of oil changes
Replaced tensioners?

Maybe instead of the poll, users can reply to those questions?

failed with a spectacular implosion when the car was at 147K original miles...

the car had endured US weather in the north (I got the car from Chicago, drove around PA and VA), the tropical climate for couple of years (Costa Rica), one super harsh winter in Russia (temperatures dropped to -40 C!!!).

Mine were replaced at 106k along with all of the tensioners but that was before I bought it so i'm not sure if it was due to them failing or preventative on my 02 4.6is with 125k miles. It spent its life driving from san Jose CA to Indiana

This poll will be inaccurate if it starts getting info from owners who have replaced as preventive maint or are unsure why a prior owner replaced them. It will see entries in the 100k to 125k range that were not failures and could have gone longer.

That's why I didn't vote.

Still, of those with failed / original guides voting, the sampling pool is kinda small to gain any real data.

I noticed that, just wanted to put that info out there to make everyone aware that prevent-maint and "unsure why" need to post info without a poll entry.
