1100 mile weekend trip...

Took a trip to San Diego this weekend to purchase a car for my daughter. Damn, gas went up $.05 in two days in the valley! Seems all gas in Northern and Southern California are between $3.92 and $4.09 for premium. The X averaged between 19 & 20 mpg doing around 80 most of the trip down hwy 5. The X ran extremely well and pulls well from 80 on up when passing. There were some small imports doing 80 as well but don't pull well at that speed. We only saw a few CHP's but almost everyone is going 75+ but not making dangerous moves. The 475 mile trip home took us 7 3/4 hours and going down took around 7 1/4 hours. All in all, a pretty nice drive. Oh, bought our daughter an '08 Audi A4 w/ Navi.

They do this sort of journey so well! We've just done 1500 miles to France and back via their (smooth) motorways and taking full advantage of the higher speed limits (85mph in the dry vs 70 in the UK) meaning much higher averages could be achieved compared with the rubbish roads we have here

5 up, fully loaded averaged 20.6mpg at regular unleaded prices of EUR1.58/litre (USD8.65/USG )

Showed my friends Disco4 and RRS how well they go up the Jura mountains too - pretty good for a 6 year old car!

Going down to So. Cal, we averaged around 19mpg. This is probably because the a/c was on. Coming back, the mpg average went up about 1.5 mpg without the a/c on.

Went from CT to Vermont this weekend in my 06 4.4i. Average 20.9 on the ride up and 21.5 on the way home. Not bad. 500+ miles round trip.

Paid $3.84 for gas (93oct) in CT and $3.68 in VT...

The mpg's greatly depend on how fast you drive, especially with our X5's. I think if we drove 70 as opposed to 80+, we would have be able to achieve 21 mpg. It's all a trade off. One mpg for 10 mph is a fair trade off for me if I'm driving 7-8 hours and can get to my destination an hour earlier.

Cruise control is set at 75-80mph. Never over 80.

Same here. Traveling to So Cal involves some climbing through the passes which also sucks a lot of gas. The X powers up the hills though. Driving at night, we can use the cruise at 80. During the day, too many cars and trucks to safely use it. Besides, anything over 80 can ticket territory. Under 80 is usually safe as traffic flows that fast.

nice! Interesting my buddy from SoCal is now shopping for a 09+ A4 for his wife and found one up here in Bay Area. Figures the car you want is always on the wrong half of the state! I have done that trip many times for cars out of LA / SD area, although more often I will fly down and drive back. It was a nice weekend for a road trip - mostly clear and sunny!

Congrats on the new ride!

Gas prices in SoCal are crazy high right now. I put $40 yesterday at $3.94/gallon, which is the highest I have ever put into any of my cars.
