'02 M5 instrument cluster in '04 X5

Hello guys,

I bought a used M5 instrument cluster to replace my ´04 X5´s that had dead pixels... The M5 cluster was supposed to work just fine, as I have read in other posts, but this one just doesn't...

1. Red RPM lights always on
2. Fuel indicator very erratic
3. Gear indicator does not work
4. DSC light always on
5. Original OBD module does not function at all... it only displays the time and radio station... No other functions
6. Service indicator does not work
7. It seems that the speedometer shows less than actual speed.

I put the old one back in and the OBD started working again.

Is the "new" cluster simply not compatible or is there anything else I should do to make it work?

Thanks in advance for any ideas!

E39 M5's are all manual so I don't think the automatic gear indicator is going to work. I believe also you need to run wires for the oil temp gauge as well. It may be compatible, but with some modifications.

where did you read in other posts that an m5 instrument cluster would work? i mean did you do any homework? all m5's are manual transmissions, what makes you think the gear shift indicator would work?

the ME9 software is completely different than the MS S52. the rpm indicator will simply not work!

DSC lamp is on, due to coding error! fuel gauge is erratic because the cluster is not coded for size of tank correctly, and the OBC uses the DXC module with Fuel Level senders to calculate range also!

The OBC, not the OBD. is part of the instrument cluster. It simply may not work because it is locked out due to coding!

Of couse the service indicator will not work, the Instrument cluster compares itself to the Lamp Module to determine if tampering has taken place.

Again, the cluster is not coded correctly for this vehicle to determine vehicle speed, and tire sizes. Speedometer will be off!.

Here is what you need to do. Sell the M5 cluster. Purchase a used 2004-2006 4.4 Instrument cluster. Or 3.0I instrument cluster for vehicles with Navi. or a 2004-2006 4.8is Instrument cluster. If it is used, you will need to purchase a M35080 chip programmer to wipe and clear the EEPROM. Then re-code the instrument cluster so the VIN/Milage/SIA data will match the vehicle.

you need a 4.8 cluster to get the cluster to work perfectly

There are two different type of clusters in the E53. "Low" and "High". If you had the "low" type before you need an adapter for the "high" cluster.

May be. But the basic difference is the low and the high type of cluster. There you will need the adapter. The rest can be recoded.
