I've been to Tirol (touring on a BMW K100RS bike - nice roads!) and I can tell you it's nothing like Australia. Even what we call mountains are just small hills compared to what you have there. My 2005 3.0d averages 8.6 litres/100km (calculated, not OBC) but most of my driving is rural, not urban.

I use to average 16.5/100km in my 2001 4.0L v8. I know the claimed consumption is around to 10-11l/100km mark, but I have never been able to average less than 12 in the daily city running. When doing long trips I have managed as much as 1000km per tank.
I have switched off the auxilary heater and see how I go with the consumption. I think I will have the unit unplugged as long as it doesn't throw any error codes. |

My fuel consumption (2005 3.0d) improved quite a lot when I got my air filter replaced. It went from, I think, around 14 down to about 10.

I had that done last June, a couple of months after I bought it. It hadn't been done for about 60k and was pretty black, unsurprisingly. The previous owner lived on the outskirts of Melbourne, so I guess it's probably seen more than it's fair share of dust.

i just now filled my 05 3.0d up and i did just on 900 km, the add fuel light had just come on, cost $128 aud to fill at $1.489 per litre
i typical drive fastish but not aggressively, mostly bumper to bumper and city driving i lose about .4 of a litre per 100 km when using the A/C |
