finally got the trans failsafe program

on my 04 4.8is. tranny had been acting up for a while it has 120k on it so its not something i didnt expect. but this is the first fail safe progrm code. but when i shut the beast off it went away and didnt come back on..is this the sign of the tranny gettting much worse,,cuz honestly it wasnt that bad before, id figure id drive it until the tranny just wouldnt shift anymore. but today it dropped a gear on the higheay and sent the rpms to like 6500rpms. id much rather repalce the tranny than the motor. so i think its time. anybody know where to get a remanufactured tranny with a warrnaty for this beast. i actually got a pretty good quote before from the tranny shop for a BRAND new unit from zf.. he said like 5200 for the tranny does that sound to good to be true. and hes telling me like 500 for the fluids..should i get them myself and will it save me money to do so and where whould i get the fluid from? any help would be greatly appreciated.. i figure with a new tranny this truck will last a lifetime or at least until i have to get a new tranny..

Sounds like you found a pretty good deal on a tranny. Have you changed the fluids and filter prior to the fail safe codes or checked to see that the tranny had plenty of fluid?

Just a thought.... Good Luck!

tranny fluid is full. i didnt change the filter. i figured with all the hooting the tranny does and the fact that it likes to downshift right after going into the gear it should be in, that is probably the silinoids on the valve body.. really didnt think wasting like 400 bucks to change the fluid and filter would make any difference. rather use that 400 towards my total rebuild. im dropping it off on monday to get rebulilt (while i can still drive it 2 hours to jersey) ill let u guys know how it turns out.. 4000 for a total rebuild doesnt seem to bad, as long as i get it back and its perrrrfect. i did think about just swapping in a new valve body but the cost of that and the work to do it was like 3500. so id rather just spend an extra 500 and have the whole tranny cleaned and checked, and any broken parts replaced. the company i founf in jersey seems to know lots about the zf transmission and have done plenty. and the way he explained the process on what they do, i think im making the right decision.
