4.8is '04 Trans Fill Level
I'm just changing the oil in my trans (90K miles and lots of towing) and I can't determine the fill level. There is a large plug in the pan next to the drain plug (both on the bottom near the back of the pan) that has an internal bung with a plastic luvor on it. Seems to me that this is the fill hole and the bung is at the appropriate fill level height internally? I haven't seen this system before, but the rest of the exterior case is clean, no fill plug... Thanks! |

Right, the trans has two holes. The very bottom is the drain and the one located to the side on the bottom is the fill. Appropriate level would be to fill the pan until new fluid just seeps out from the hole. make sure the car is level and follow proceedure. Then you can button 'er up and take er for a spin, jack her up again, remove the fill hole and add if needed.

Oh and this type of system is on a lot of car, especially the dif. Some cars use the dip stick tube as the fill and some use a dedicated fill spout located in the engine bay, much like the oil fill.

To fill you fill it till it comes out then start the truck and with it running fill again till it comes out. Make sure the truck is level as gtr said.
