What additional parts should I replace "while I'm in there" for tensioners?
Hi all,
We have a 2001 X5 4.4 sport with 60k on it. Over the weekend, we noticed a whining noise coming from the pulley/water pump/belt area. Loudest in the morning when first started, then subside after about a minute or so. It doesn't completely go away, just quieter. Very noticeable when you give it a little gas. I am thinking it is coming from the tensioners. Is that a good guess? And while I'm in there, I am also thinking of replacing the water pump, thermostat, belts, and hoses. Is it good advice to replace these things or should I wait since most of the other threads on these parts are usually around 100k? What additional parts would you replace if you had to do it again? Thanks. Peter |

All those parts you mentioned, change it. You are already in there and those things come apart anyways, might as well do it. And it would depend on how far you want to go. Sky is the limit. Since it is an '01 with 60K, take off the intake mani and valve covers. Do all the gaskets, sparks, hoses, etc. Also, since you have the water pump out, and if you take the intake off, you can easily see if your valley pan is shot. Just look on the sides and if you see coolant, you can easily remove the valley pan. But again, depends on how far you want to go. You could just get away with the "front" Water pump, belts, hoses, expansion tank, air filter, etc.
