Both Camshaft Sensors Fail at the Same Time?

2001 X5, 4.4, low miles at 48k - SES light and ODB codes P0340 and P0348 - corresponding to BMW codes 113 and 114. Camshaft sensor indicating a misfire and may be a sensor failure but both sensors at the same time tells me something else may be wrong. I did clear the codes and monitored over 3 weeks and the same codes have returned about 4 times - twice for for bank 1 (P0340 and 343) and, at different times, twice for bank2 (P0348). No starting or performance issues.

I think the odds of both sensors failing at the same time are pretty small. Any ideas on an upstream or downstream cause that would effect both sensors at the same time? DME fault, maybe?

Well, expect the unexpected with our vehicles. It is possible that they both failed. A quick and inexpensive way to find out is to replace them and see if the codes come back. Good Luck!
