Special X-fer case fluid on a 2001 3.0?

The local indy shop is quoting me $150 to channge the x-fer case fluid. When I declined as I can do it myself, he started talking about special additives and Fluids?? I stressed to him that it was a 2001 (not with the x-drive) and he still said it required two additives.

BMW's version of the fluid may have had special additives, but I believe that the fluid is Dexron. Since there are no clutch plates and thus no concern about the friction characteristics, I am not sure what any special additives would do.

AFAIK no special fluid is required without x-drive as no clutch inside. Have a look at TIS

I put in straight Mobil 1 synthetic ATF. No additives should be added.

I used royal purple in mine and have had no issues. No special fluid needed. The BMW oem fluid works just fine too, but not at $ 150.00. lol I think he may be taking advantage of you. Have you had the work done already? If so ask him to show you the bottle he used.
