Tailgate tail light mod

There used to be a thread here discussing adding lights to the tailgate of the E53. These lights would be in the tailgate portion of the rear hatch on the outside, similar to the E70. Has anyone got a link to this thread or done this mod themselves?

I took his post as.... he wants more light in the back..... to like hook up a trailer or somthing. lol

OP, please verify what type of lighting your looking for. Vanity or functional?

Yes, this is the mod I was talking about.

Those inner red panels on the tailgate, with lighting inside them. The E70 has this, but E53 did not.

Did you do this mod mrbmwx5?

Yup it on my X5...I done it using led's strip lights...You can add the bulbs to your exiting socket and tap the wire to the outer tail lights.

Thanks JCL. The rear fog light mod seems to only light the lower part of the light panel. mrbmwx5's mod looks more like the E70, filling in the whole light panel next to the taillight.

Stripes would look amaizing. (long ones) like e70 has it. However, having rear fogs is still good. 1 more thing, do the light switch with autto setting actually activate auto function??)

What I'm wondering, is there any point doing the fog light retrofit?
Why not simply connect these lights directly to tail lights on the quarter panel?
