Wierd sound that someone might be able to tell me something about

Someone around here might be able to point me in the right direction. Every once in a while when I back up the car makes this groaning noise. It comes from the back end, I think. It usually happens when I'm turning backwards. It sounds almost like the brakes are rubbing or something. Does anyone have any ideas, or should I make another trip to the fine folks at Tulley BMW?

I walked right into that one. I must admit it was pretty good. But seriously, any thoughts?

is it like a loud whining noise whenever you put your car in reverse?? sounds like it's coming from your rear breaks?

Yeah... It's kind of a deep whine... It's hard to describe. It sounds like it's coming from the brakes.

Many cars brakes creak as they disengage, especially going backwards since they are used to operating in the opposite direction.

my 2001 330xi used to do this too, usually when wet or cold. I tried to explain it to my dealer many times with no solution because it didn't happen every time and just my luck, they were never able to replicate the issue. It usually stopped once my car was warmed up/dry or if I had driven for a while and then needed to reverse to park. It might just be something you have to deal with? Or TRY telling your dealer about it, hopefully they'll give you a better answer than mine.

i think i've suggested this before, check e46fanatics.com , it's a good resource for your 3-series vehicle.
