Replacing the clutch fan with an electric one?
I've been looking into this on the M5 boards, and some people have been using 18" Perma-Cool fans pushing 2500cfm. However, after some research, I've found some fans that push more air (which can't be a bad thing): Zirgo ZFB16S - Zirgo Ultra High Performance Electric Fans - Overview - SummitRacing.com Zirgo ZFU16S - Zirgo Ultra High Performance Electric Fans - Overview - SummitRacing.com Be Cool 75068 - Be Cool Electric Fans - Overview - SummitRacing.com Believe it or not, the typical 18" fan was pushing 2,500 cfm, while the 16" fans seem to be the best bet, pushing 3,000 cfm+. Now, how will that fan work out on a V8? Well judging from this fan: Mopar Performance P5007266 - Mopar Performance Viper Fan and Control Modules - Overview - SummitRacing.com Just fine. That fan is designed by Mopar for Viper V10 motor swaps. A Viper motor (all 8.3 liters) DEFINITELY makes more heat that our 3.0, 4.4, 4.6, and 4.8 motors, yet that fan only pushes 2,370 cfm. I am definitely researching it further, but just wanted to know if anyone had anything to add. Edit: Another issue I am researching pertains to sealing around the fan. Should I leave the open air around it or force all incoming air through the electric fan? I will be using a factory shroud to do this project.

I just thinking about this same subject today, I did a search a while back and came up with nothing. I to am surprised that in this day and age BMW chose to use a clutch fan, what were they thinking, do the newer X5's use a clutch fan also?

Not sure at all. My quick searching yielded this article from Flex-A-Lite, which makes both engine-driven and electric fans, so they are not biased (at least I don't think so): Which is Better
The interesting thing I read that is that they say a sub-5.0 V8 needs about 2,500cfm, while a 5.0+ needs 2,800 and up. Judging from the comparative hp-to-size ratio, I'm thinking a fan pulling 2,800 cfm or more can't hurt. The other thing that concerns me is that they say a fan should cover 70% or more of your radiator. I am about to go measure, but I'm pretty sure a 16" fan won't do it, yet it moves more than an 18".

If you do find a suitable replacement what about the belt?

I was gonna say the same thing... some V8 E53's have an electronic fan OEM, meaning all the stock parts are available for fitment. Control on the other hand isn't pre-wired or anything so you'd have to wire up the circuit yourself.

I wonder if it could be made to fit an earlier model X5, mine is a 2002 4.6is.

Just to clarify that you guys are not talking about the fan on the front side of the radiator for the AC?

My take...what ever you save in rotational energy...(remember its a fluid clutch and does not rotate one to one with engine rpm)...is taken back from you by increased alternator drag.
