Anyway, my alignment was quite a way out and i had the camber reduced to negative 1, this seemed to work without pushing out the toe. Its only been a few months but i do a fair bit of driving and wear is pretty even at the moment, im going back to the alignment shop in a month or so for a check up to see if everything has stayed reasonably in spec so ill let you know. Even with negative camber, from research i did on this forum it seems it may wear a little prematurely but not as bad as your photos suggest. I'd definitely check out your control arms and bushings. I should mention that when i had this problem that i also got alot of help and advice from forum members so a big thank you guys. Good luck |

Wow!!My wife's X5 had the same problem. The camber? whatever, my dealer guy said it was -2.4 and they adjusted it to -1.5 for both. and everything is going down evenly. |

When i bought my 02' 4.6 it had a BRAND NEW pair of rears on it (they still had the titties on them). First thing we did was take it on a 3k mile road trip, and when we got back they looked just like yours. I was so ticked off, ordered a new set of rears from tirerack and had them drop shipped to my favorite tire shop. They checked the alignment and it was "within bmw tolerance" which was something like -2.7 on each side. I had them take every ounce of negative camber out of the rear to get it as close to 0.00 as possible. They got me to -.5 and -.7 and thats mechanically the limit of the rearend on my X5. That set of rears ran me almost 50k before the whole thing needed new rubber again.
btw, i run max pressure in my tires. And I kind of cheated a little at the end of that last sets life span. I over inflated by about 10lbs to make the tire dome and get it off the shoulder of the tire. Good bad.. whatever.. it got me about 5k more miles before i just didn't feel comfortable driving on worn rubber any more. |

I just took the X into the dealership for reprogramming of the tranny and they did a complimentary check as well...yea, checking for things to sell me. Anyway, they gave it a clean bill of health. Three days later, I'm looking at the X from behind on a hill and see the cords of the LR tire! Ordered a set of Hankook Ventus AS007's 1 hour later. Called the dealership and left a message for the service manager. He called me back and we had a "discussion" about the his mechanic's assessment and the actual condition of the tire. You would think the dealer would know about the abnormal inside wear on the rear tires associated with the X. I was pretty pissed they would miss something so obvious. I put a lot of importance on my tires and NEVER, until now, have run a tire down to the cords. Oh well, the new tires are on, I've gone to my wheel alignment person and had him dial out as much negative camber as he could from the rear. We will see what happens.

The way your tire is worn could also be caused by bad subframe bushings. I suggest you have them checked. Do you hear loud thumping noise from the back when you hit the speed bumps or small bumps on the road? those are the indications of bad bushings.
good luck

I wouldn't even put those tires on at all. You mentioned that you moved to the front. For safety reasons, stop using those tires.

I had this problem took it to the dealer and they priced out at $1600 the entire bushings, ball joints and control arms was shot. When you jack it up and grab the rear tire u can move it and hear clicks. Anyway took it to two locations and they all said its a big job have to remove both drive shafts, labor intensive. All cam in around $1200 so I figures with a 2 year warrantee spend the extra $300 and do it right.
Hint was that they could not get the rears perfect ..... your alignment will never go out that bad to cause that. There is mechanical problems and you need to get them replaced.

He's right about dialing out the negative camber. BMW designed the rears so the vehicle would not rollover. When I had my new Vredestein's installed I had the rears dialed out so the wear on the inside would be minimum.
