3.0i engine - normally loud or problem ?

Hi everyone, I own '04 X5 3.0i and '02 E39 525i. Both engines are M54 but they sound totally different. While my 525i is super quiet on acceleration
X5 engine is much louder, it sounds like a groan and I can almost feel the resonance through the steering wheel, cabin and pedals especially on higher RPMs.

I'm just wondering if anyone else had a chance to compare E39 and E53 and
notice this difference. If this is not normal, what could be the cause ?

Thank you all in advance !

Vlad

Good question... I have a 2003 3.0i and my daughter drives a 2002 325i (e46). The 3.0i has more horse power than the 2.5i for obvious reasons. The weight of the truck is virtually double what the car weighs so, the 3.0i is working harder and thus, noisier.

My 2 cents...

Cheers!

We had an E46 325, an E53 3.0, and three other recent BMW six cylinder models. I never noticed that the E53 was louder than any of them. All five were very similar, with the possible exception of the engine note on the Z4 (convertible, and it had a tuned engine sound port into the cabin)

The 3.0 works harder in the E53, so if you are using all of the revs and power that could be it. Something isn't right if it is groaning and resonating, though.
