Changed Drivers entry door latch and now car won't start.
I recently changed my door latch on the drivers side and now the car won't start. The battery, alternator and kick are all good and just over a year old. When I turn the key in the ignition, the lights, radio, control panel turn on. When I fully turn the key, it will not start the car. I am based in Accra Ghana and have a local mechanic chap who try's his best but we just can't come around it. When he uses his diagnostic machine we come up with the codes 1. EWS3.3 interface engine management-immobilized 2. CAN timeout transmission control unit Initially I did get the car started after a few try's when the latch was changed and that was after the alarm system came on but now it's just not starting. Any help from out here would be sincerely appreciated. Please help. Zazoo.... BMW X5 4.4i N62 2004 |

Looks like you might need an EWS reboot.
Have the machanic with his software, mate the key to the car. |

Holy crap that is a new one!
For additional info that may help, what was the reason the door latch was replaced in the first place?

Hi g300d,
Changed the drivers door latch because for a few days I could not get in from the drivers side I had to either drop the windows with the keys and reach in or get in from another door. The outside handle also remained in the pull to open position and did not flush back in position when released. Still looking at how to solve this issue and unfortunately car is parked in the airport and it's quite a hassle. Upallnight unfortunately I only have one key... |

Zazoo,
Changing the inner door carrier does not have anything to do with the engine management system. It must be a coincidence that this happened just when you replaced the carrier. I have changed all 4 carriers on my car and never any such issue. Besides, the only "electrics" that are inside the door cards are the window/mirror controls and door light...should you have shorted any of them by any chance then start by checking the fuses. Otherwise, it sounds more like an alarm fault...this happened to my old E36, everything came on but the engine and the culprit was the alarm. Is your alarm aftermarket?

Hi Awntchi,
My thoughts too from day one of the problem. No my alarm system came with the car not aftermarket. I told the mechanics that this whole thing looks like a fault from the alarm system. Actually I did get to start the car but after a few tries and also after I had done stuff like closing all doors locking with the remote key control then opening the drivers door with the key and then it started but after the alarm had also gone off a couple of times. Then I drove it to work at the airport no problem drive was good but once I shut it down its refused to start. Been two weeks now. Thanks for any suggestions guys. |

Ok, mine was aftermarket and I had to take it out.
The only other thing that might be possible is if you somehow got to the central locking mechanism inside the door....have you tried locking the car manually and turning the key twice? (The second time activates the alarm) Once you do that wait 10 sec and open again manually with the key.

I read this in the car's manual, now I don't remember if it was the X5s manual or the 540s but I assume there is no difference. Just double twist the key when locking and unlock like normal (one twist). Let me know how you get on, I can see if I can find the description in the manual.
