OP - if you need a mechanic for this, call Munich West (404) 296-6111 (near Dekalb Farmers Market) for second quote. Quality indie with cheaper hourly labor - not sure about parts quotes.

First off I'd seriously question why they want to change the O2 sensors...! They are not part of any maintenance and are not due to be changed without some type of failure, and they are heavily monitored so they throw symptom specific faults when they have an issue. Do not change them for no reason.

Also, many shops see any fault that has O2 in the description and want to change the sensors, but 99% of the time it is a fuel mixture fault and has nothing to do with the sensor itself. Before you even consider paying out that much money, make sure you need it done. And from the sound of it you most likely don't.

Replacing O2 sensors (post cat or pre cat) is an easy task on the e53 for a mechanic but did they tell you why they wanted change the O2 sensors? particularly the 4 of them! What error code did they read? O2 sensors sometime may need to be replace but only if they are faulty and never did I see having to replace the 4 of them. That does not sound right to me at all.

I went by that place over the weekend for an oil filter...seemed like nice enough guys, but jesus christ that is stupid. I live in Kenmore, have all my tools in Edmonds and will do it for FAR less.

Sensors are more like $80 each and only the front ones are the ones that need to be changed, the rear 02's do nothing for driveability as they just tell the ECU that your catalytic converters are there.

I got got codes: p0176 bank 2 lean
p0171 bank 1

Figures I would try the 02 sensors since they are cheaper and recommended to be changed a 100k

100k is a good interval, but only the fronts need to be replaced as theyre the ones who feed A/F ratios to the ECU.

I always question "German" shops when I start talking BMW only and they look at me like a deer in headlights. One of the techs was in a ladies car in the parking lot using their version of a code reader and we started talking about the tool he was using. When I told him how I coded my 7 after converting it from an auto to a 6spd, he asked where I got the transmission from. I explained that the M62 is a similar block to the S62, and he had no clue of what the hell I was talking about. Eventually the guy who runs the desk got back from lunch and I told him how I accidentally ordered filters for an S52 engine and needed one for an M62 instead...once again, deer in headlights. I told him that I had a BMW shop in Boise and he replied saying "Ive never had a f*cking clue about those engine code thingys"...at that point I said thanks, I'd keep them in mind in the future (just being curtious) and had to walk out.

Are those direct or universals...universals are garbage.
