Coolant type and compatibilty

I did a search and found nothing related to the type of coolant we can use in the BMW (4.4L 2002 model to be specific). The manual and repair books I found call for you to use only BMW coolant. I have a lot of experience owning and maintaining VW/Audi vehicles which require a special non-phosphorous based coolant. The phosphorous apparently will attack and corrode certain metals and seals used in the cooling system. So you can't use the typical "Peak" coolant found at the local store.

So, I want to know if the BMW is the same way. Does it require a special coolant?

Use only coolant specified for your X5. BMW coolant or Zerex G48 can be found for a reasonable price.

BMW coolant is pretty darn cheap, even at the dealer. $21 for a bottle I believe and you only need 1 bottle. You mix it with distilled water to make 2 gallons.

There are certain instances you could do with generic brands. Coolant is not one of them
