Alternator Whine

Hi all,

Question. I have an electric alternator type whine that can be heard through the stereo system, with the stereo on or off. I have a 2002 with NAV but no DSP (Australian model).

It isn't TOO bad but it's gotta go. Where should I start looking for solutions?

Cheers,

Brett

That whine could be the bearings going out. I know you said it sounded electrical but out alt's are water cooled and do need replacement. My 4.4i had the same noise(If it is the same one you are talking about) and I replaced the alt with a refurb and viola, no more noise. Hope that helps.

Cheers mate. A bit weird that the noise comes through the speakers though?

I had a similar issue about a month or so back. It turned out that the alternator was overcharging the electrical system. The unit was replaced and the "whine" disappeared. In any case I would check the output voltage of the unit to ensure it was within spec.

Ah nice, will get the alternator charge checked in the next couple of weeks.

Just for the info of you US guys. Refurb Alt from the States - 480 AUD delivered. Refurb from cheapest local guy - 928 AUD. Not cool. And the government wonders why we order internationally.

Don't you EVER complain about your prices again boys

Thanks guys.
