Finally installed my sub box from Allstars- what a difference

I'd purchased one of the sub boxes Allstars was making some time back, had it configured for an 8" sub since I've only got the standard system, not DSP. But between work, reassembling the race car and thinking about trading the X5 for a better tow vehicle, all the components have been sitting on a shelf in my basement. On Thursday I decided to hold onto the X5 for another 6 months or so and start looking for an Audi Q7 turbodiesel to come off lease, so I figured I might as well install the pieces in the X5.

8" JL Audio sub, with a Pioneer 200W mono sub amp. Originally tried a couple of other amps but they were all just a bit too big for the space available and still allow use of the spare. This amp acepts low and high level inputs which negated having to use a separate line out converter. Wired everything from the threads here (thanks X5James and others) and it works like a charm. Set the x-over at 100Hz, +3db gain, and buttoned it all up. The system now has bass! By being able to run the head unit bass flat, the other speakers inside are reproducing sounds better too.

Only question I had though was the remote-on wire. All the threads talk about using the white wire- pin 10 in the white plug. But this wire is hot any time the ignition is on. I tried to find the trigger wire from the head unit to the amp and couldn't figure out which one it was.

Also, for those who've done a sub, have you opened up the factory side cover for air movement? I feel like the bass isn't as accurate with the cover on, right in front of the woofer so I'm running with the cover off at the moment. But can't do that forever or the tools and spares I carry to the track with me will eventually damage the woofer cone. Considering cutting an 8" hole in the cover and getting a good heavy universal mesh grill for that area. Thoughts?

Other than those two minor questions, I'm a very happy person.

Waiting to see your pics of the install but the grill cutout is a must. I noticed night and day differences with my sub setup. I also used an amp with high level inputs too. Alpine MRP- 850m its under my spare tire too. not bolted down or anything but all the reviews I read is that amp never overheats. I had it now for almost 6months. I used that same remote wire that was posted in all the threads and have not had an issue. Remember the X has the feature to turn the radio on with no key. Maybe thats why your seeing that turn on wire showing hot all the time.
