Thanks, when you say programming the car, are you meaning getting rid of the error message (self leveling suspension inactive)? Or is there other things involved?

Correct, its just the annoying error that has to be reprogrammed out. Its not expensive, its just a matter of finding a BMW tech who can/will do it. My 05 X5 was actually programmed remotely, so you don't even have to be in the same location.

I have found a place to do it, there is also a module you can buy.. That's $400 though, I have now been told I don't need the upper bearings or pads, is this correct? I currently dont have the car so I cant check

This man is right on. My local dealership had my car for a full week and could not remove the error message, even though BMW headquarters said it could be done. I took it to Chicago, and it was done in 4 hours.

Yes, a BMW tech can program the car remotely. However, this does require that your car be sitting at a shop with the diagnostic equipment connected. If you are in the Raleigh, NC area, Dan at Bimmer Performance did this for my 05 4.8is.
I to was unable to get BMW to do this, so there is a guy out in the Mid-West that did the programming remotely.

I went to a junk yard and purchased the stock springs/shocks off a 4.4 X5, and everything was a direct swap. Very straight forward, in fact the mechanic was not a BMW mechanic. very straight forward.
only challenge is the programming....
