Replacing the valve cover gasket

boom the valve cover is probably brick solid and needs replacememnt noticed smoke yesterday and seems to be leaking a stream, looked under no oil but there is oil on side panels(left side). Will replace valve cover today or tomorrow but would like to know your opinions as to what else might need replacement while digging there? thank you all in advance. 04 x5 3.0

Spark plugs, maybe timing cover gaskets (you're halfway there by doing the valve covers).

There's more... but I can't remember right now.

I wouldn't personally, but I've only owned a E53 for a couple weeks now and am a complete noob with them. The Land Rover engines I'm used to leak, and it's just accepted that they leak. Sort of a badge of ownership to have a slicked up driveway.

Oh... you could change your vanos seals while in there, but I haven't read all that many accounts of them leaking... plus I think I read it's a bit of a PITA.

Pssssh. The shop that the previous owner of mine took it to quoted him $4k to replace the timing cover gaskets, valve cover gaskets, and alternator bracket seal.

I replaced my gasket a few weeks ago, easy and fun!! Did you replace the bolts? I put the same ones back in and am getting small traces of oil leaking out of the bolts.
