Instrument Cluster lights fade in and out

Driving last night my headlights turned on automatically as expected. But my gauge cluster, HVAC and radio lights were fading in and out. I adjusted the dimmer switch all the way up (brightest setting) and nothing changed. When I adjusted the switch all the way down (dimmest setting) the lighting appeared to be on the brightest setting but the fading in and out stopped.
To me this seems like I should replace the dimmer switch. Before I start replacing parts I was hoping someone else encounter and fix this. Any help would be appreciated.

I had a issue like this b4 too. Was brightest setting but it seemed to dimm out. It only appeared once and i never thought about it after. This was also b4 my car crapped out and died cause my battery needed to be replaced. Once again just check if your batteries are replaced cause if you have a x5 that was b4 06 and 2nd owner most likely the battery is just dying out and causing random electronic errors

Think I would see any other indication? I would expect my headlights to be effected too.

This has been a constant fading in and out. I will check the battery but still leaning toward a bad dimmer switch.
