Coolant Recovery Tank Trouble

Hey Fellow X5 owners,

I have a 2003 x5 3.0i and my Coolant Recovery Tank cracked. It looks like someone took a can opener and split it open all the way down the side. What would make so much pressure build up to make this happen. Oh yeah i just changed this 6 months ago. If you need anymore info let me know.
Thanks, Lion Jr

Common failure point (among others). For a comprehensive review of M54 engine coolant system maintenance issues see:

It's a common issue, like streetjunkie noted.

I just had mine changed at 78k mi as a preventative maintenance.

Having my Cayenne Turbo's tank changed also as preventative maintenance.

In rereading the OP, I understand his issue is premature failure of the expansion tank that was replaced only months ago. Older tanks fail along plastic weld seams due to repeated heating/cooling of the plastic material over long term vehicle operation. Could be quality issue with the new tank itself (OEM vs aftermarket), or some other failure point in the coolant system.
