had dual 12" Rockfords when I was in high school - think I ran them in parallel off a 500 watt mono amp. they definitely hit if it's heavy bass you're after!
no subs in the X - the trunk rattles enough as it is...

Buy a JL stealth box and put a grill on that factory cover panel. Trust me, it'll be plenty of bass.

JL Audio Mobile - SB-B-X5/10W1v2
BMW X5 Stealthbox by JL Audio Seems a little weak though i think 2 12" would be slightly cheaper

Let's be honest - do you want this bass to show off or to enjoy it youself? I'm ok with either answer as I used to push 1000 watts RMS through 2 12"s not too long ago. I could show off like a champ but most of the time the bass was ridiculous/gave me headaches and I had to turn it down. Now I have an 02 X5 with DSP and I find the factory subs are fine (I'm only 26 btw)... I could appreciate a little more bass via a JL stealthbox, but it's just not worth the money to me at this time. My advice though, if you really want to THUMP... get some Kicker L7s.

Budget is going to be the biggest factor determining what you should get.
First thing I can say is stick to a single sub setup with more power rather than splitting the same amount across two subs. You will save a ton of space and likely save money. I promise you can get the output you are looking for out of one woofer. Next, decide what your goal is, loud or sound quality or a combo of both (still, weight the importance) this will help determine which setup you should focus on. If you care mostly about output level or spl, I would recommend a large ported box with a sub similar to a kicker l7 that was mentioned previously. The enclosure you use HUGELY effects the sound, probably even more than the sub itself. For more sq, go either sealed or a lower tuned ported setup and use a subwoofer target sq more...example would be Image dynamics IDMAX 12" jlW6 or similar. A good combo of both sq and spl would be a jl w7 or re xxx. Both sound amazing in about 3 cubic feet ported at 32hz and 1000-2000 watts. Spendy however! You can use the stock head unit, btw, and get really god precut voltage for both a sub amp and aftermarket speaker amp using a unit by audio control that converts and amplifies the signal from your stock head unit. I'm running a 12" xxx with 2100 watts and focal 165v2s all around with a jl 6 channel amp...the front has 4 channels bridged to it. Sounds pretty amazing. |

Thanks Rocky, that was quite helpfull!
Ill look into it a little more, that does seem quite pricey, i want more on the cheap side i guess. Would this be alright guys? or is this a crappy setup? Amazon.com: MTX TNP212D2 Dual 12" Subwoofer And Amplifier: Electronics |
