04 4.8is blue smoke accellerating from a stop and sometimes at start-up??

My 4.8 with 94k miles puffs a cloud of blue smoke when accelerating from a stop and sometimes at start-up or reving the engine. I think its burn some oil as well. I just replaced the 2 crankcase vent valves and didn't see any difference. What are other items should I inspect or replace. Thanks for any help this is embarassing with such a mean looking machine.

Did you inspect the old vent valves for damage? If they were damaged the intake would be full of oil and this could be one of the reasons you are still seeing the blue smoke. That's what happened to me, I still have some blue smoke for a couple of days and then it all cleared up. However my valve was clearly broken.

Another possibility is that you could have leaky valve stem seals.

Drove for about an hour after installing them, still smoking. The old valves looked fine, no tears or broken springs.

Any idea whats involved with fixing leaky valve stems seals. It's it something I can do while the engine is in the x5? My brother is ase master tech, but on american cars. Thx

Don't sell your X because of that!
Your brother will be able to do the job. If it needs valve stem seals and valve guides, they are available aftermarket and very cheap. The big part of the job is labour. If your brother can do it for you, it could be a not too expensive fix.

You can check KOPerformance.
I never bought from them, but they seem to have a lot of hard to find parts. (valve seals, valve guides)

2005 BMW :: X5 4.8is (E53 chassis) - Engine - Seal Kit - Valve Stem Parts And Accessories Catalog - KO Performance

But before tearing the engine apart, be sure to rule out every other possibilities.
