Soft thud from engine compartment

All,
When my climate control fan is on there is a soft thud, in a regular pattern, coming from the engine compartment. It is usually only audible at a stop. Any idea's on what that is?
Also, I've found the fan, in the cabin, to be fairly loud. Others feel this way?
