Aftermarket Warranty Recommendations??

My X5 3.0 just came off of CPO warranty and given the potentially large cost of certain repairs, I'm starting to think about an aftermarket warranty. Have any of you had success with any particular companies? I suppose my greatest concerns are centered around the drivetrain; I plan on keeping this vehicle for a while and would hate to be stuck with having to pay for something significant like a transmission or transfer case replacement, etc... Thanks in advance for any feedback or advice-

I had Warranty Direct for 3 years: back 'then' it was relatively inexpensive and worth the cost/risk, imo. I only had a couple of chump change things go wrong, and thus the coverage cost was to the house, not me. I did not renew, because the re-up was much pricier.

There are several similar anecdotal stories of everyone's fave 3rd party company; I rec'd plugging into the Search Tab for literally pages of full threads on the topic, as opposed to waiting to read a few more anecdotes posted here.

Be sure to check out any company(s) that catch your eye, as to financial backing resources, internet reviews, etc. And, read the excluded items and 'tone' in the fine print of the 'deal', in any company you focus on, before you say yes. Also, most offer different tiers of coverage and 'deductible', so a bumper to bumper program is probably not in your interest. And, the phone call to your choice(s) can often bring a reduced 'quote' via hardball negotiation.

I used to be a table pounding advocate of 'don't own one of these sumbitches without a warranty', but I have obviously gotten over that, as I've gone several years without one...if the trans et al is your concern, (a reasonable risk), you have to decide if that cost is worth the deal. Most of these companies that survived and are still in biz, have the actuary tables down to a gnat's azz, on their side. My long 50Cts.

Thanks for the detailed reply, motordavid. I maintain this vehicle pretty meticulously and try to do preventative maintenance, but whenever I see threads up here about failing tranny's and what not, I get a little spooked.

The thing is, only 10 days after my CPO warranty expired, I had a driver side outer CV boot tear, and as I literally had less than a day before I had to leave for a race (using my X5 to tow), I ended up pony'ing up $600 to get it changed by a local indie. 600 bucks I would think would put a good dent towards the investment in a warranty. I absolutely hated to hand it over, as I prefer to do all my work myself, but I had never done the job before and didn't have the luxury of time after work to attempt the job.

Anyways, just rambling now, but I will take your advice and definitely do some heavy research before deciding whether or not to walk down that road...

I should've gotten special Electronics policy and it would've covered my NAV dead pix, but other than that is good !!!

I am curious to see what people are paying for warranties. I bought my X5 and transferred a warranty that was purchased at Carmax by the previous owner. a Warranty group called CNA is the actual company behind the warranty. I have had a great experience with this warranty. It is almost a bumper to bumper deal. I have owned the vehicle less than 6 months and have already had $4500 in covered work done. It even covered things like broken door handle and window regulator.

The x5 has about 75K miles on it now, and I think the warranty expires at 80K. I think I would be willing to pay $1200-$1500 a year to keep this kind of warranty. However, with that many miles on this type of car, I don't expect I would find a good warranty that covers everything as well as the current one.

If I can't find the right warranty, I doubt I keep the X5. It is just too hard to write checks for $x,000's...

I don't think anyone should base keeping their X or not on what's being written
on this site. Consider it yes but make a decision on it? No.

The fact is, the vast majority of the 25+ thousand members who visit this site are happy drivers
and after a few questions about minor problems don't post the fact that they are driving without writing checks for $x,000's. They just keeping driving.
