Oil leak around filter cap (edit)

After changing the oil and filter today on my M54, I've got an oil leak around the filter cap. I installed a new o-ring on the cap, and hand tightened the cap (25N-m is around hand tight, right?).

As additional information, I have just replaced the valve cover gasket, suspecting that I had oil leaking from the gasket, due to a burning oil smell shortly after startup, as well as 110K on the original gasket. I've been driving the car about 40 miles a day for the last 2 months, mostly interstate, since I read that short trips were not good on these engines. Also, I have the necessary parts for a CCV service (oil separator and hoses), but I'm not able to do this myself (HTH do I get to the OCV without removing the intake manifold?).

Any advice / suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated!

Get on youtube and search for how to change ccv. I did it on my 01 3.0 and i am no mechanic. It was a bit of a pain though. You might also read about the oil filter housing gasket leak in the forum. I just did that a few weeks ago. While doing this i noted since you have to take the alternator, move the power steering reservoir and remove the oil filter housing off, it would make it a Lot easier to get to the ccv and the hoses. Dont know what your mechanical level is and as daunting as it may look, if i can do it anyone can.

I had to read it twice to realize you said oil filter cap not filler cap. Lol

25 Nm is more than hand tight. Its leaking because it is too loose.

The oil separator sucks to do. I think you have to pull the throttle body

It helps if you've installed an OEM oil filter on the filter cap, and made sure it's seated properly... Note to self: NEVER EVER get a Wix filter again, stick with Mann...

I use wix filters all the time in the X. very good filters I think.

The last Mann filter I used (2 years ago) disintegrated down inside the canister at 7500 oci. The composite material that hold the paper element together crumbled and there was material left in the bottom that I had to scrape out with a screw driver. The composite material broke down and fused itself to the bottom of the canister. I haven't used a Mann filter since. The wix filters have a thin hard plastic disc instead of that hard gel like stuff on the Mann.
