M62 engine diesel sound

It is the famous knocking taping noise that im talking about. The sound is common and familiar to 4,4 540 740 owners. ( also there is a short rattle on cold startup ) i did an oil change 2 months ago and the rattle on start up goes away then it came back this morning. The diesel sound is always there and is a lot more noticeable when the engine is warm. Has anyone resolved this problem?? ( i can hear the knocking sound in the cabin)

Yep, sounds like Vanos rattle and the only way to make it stop that I found is to replace both of them...which I am currently doing. There are other ways to "mask" the sound i.e. running oil cleaner and then using a heavier weight oil -both of these I have tried and would not advise as I believe they may have been contributing factors in my chain guides disentigrating. Oh and by the way, the Vanos units are about $450/ea and you have to have the special tools.

I agree - sounds like the Vanos and/or timing chain guides

My 4.6IS is in the indy right now having the whole job done.

I just wanna forget it . Thx for the input. Im not gonna pay 2000 to fix this sound . I ll do it when my vanos breaks. By the way there is another way to mask the startup rattle : push the horn button

I don't know about the X5, but for the E46 3 Series, Beisan Systems has come up with an o-ring replacement kit for $60 which completely takes care of the problem. You might want check to see if they have, or are developing a kit for, the X5.
