depends on if you can find a set of clean used oem's, if not i would get aftermarkets. I would never spend the crazy amount on brand new oem's. I ran vmr csl replica's on my old m3, and they were strong and light, never had any issues. Plus i was able to get super staggered.

OEM wheels that have been refinished, unbent, uncracked, etc. you'll never really know what was wrong with them before they were fixed--thats the problem
if it was just curb rash, and then fixed i'd say nbd, But they could have been cracked and re conditioned.. just my $0.02 I have replicas on my x for the winter. I agree, they arent as nice as the real thing, but for my purposes, i dont care

Where do you buy used wheels? I looked on Craigslist and eBay.

I'd be very careful using replica wheels. The market for those runs the gamut from pig iron to halfway decent.
Reputable aftermarket wheels (BBS, OZ, HRE et al) are often superior to the OEM wheels, but sometimes cost significantly more than OEM. OEM wheels are the safest bet because considerations such as unsprung weight, ride quality and suspension geometry have been addressed during their design. Their metallurgy cannot be called into question either. I would venture a guess that very few (if any) of the replica manufacturers have taken these things into account. If you run wheels that are significantly heavier than OEM, then you run the risk of degrading performance and suspension or tire life. There are some great OEM wheel designs that fit and many are available used-I'd go for that!!

I'm planning to build a 325 monster. So my X will be auction block soon. I flirt with selling my BMW wheels... Not sure if I put the snow flake wheels (Y spoke) on it I will get less or make my X harder to sell.
Anyway, what I'm getting at, is sites like this one is prolly your best bang for the buck to get good quality OEM wheels. |

Google, search BMW forums, use searchtempest.com for craigslist & ebay, etc. I have no problems with replicas. I sold my original 168s and bought some M5 reps then bought some X6 M reps. Pretty nice for only $800. I would just buy those reps from wheelsand caps and be done with it. Just verify they're not some weird offset and you're probably going to need some hub rings. |

I bought all my reps from ebay. I doubt there are many mfgrs of reps for the 177s. They are all probably similar quality. Vibrations can be caused by many variables, like condition of tires, wheels, suspension, alignment, rotors, etc. I can't speak for others but I've never had a vibration I could not resolve - and the solution was never to replace a wheel because of poor quality. Most of the time its proper tire/wheel balancing and/or requiring hub-rings. That's my personal experience and all with replica wheels. YMMV. |
