4.8is x-drive question, please help!

I just bought a 08/2004 made 4.8is to replace my old 2001 made 4.4i. I found one thing different on 4.8is compare to the old 4.4i was that the one side front wheel on 4.8is could rotate itself without the other side wheel rotate together. On the old 4.4i, single side front wheel cannot rotate itself, when you tried to rotate one side front wheel, the other side front wheel would rotate together. So I wonder is that anything wrong with my 4.8is? Or it is normal because different setting on 4WD system, in which x-drive on 4.8is and AWD on pre-facelift 4.4i? Please give me some hint on this. Thanks for help!
