Tech is saying a used cluster can not be recoded...

I know I have a question related to this, but now I'm a little desperate. He says that BMW told him that a used cluster can not be recoded and I have to buy a new one. My cluster is shot and I'm trying to do this for the least amount of $. My kids are already gonna have a bad Christmas...

My understanding of it is that people in the aftermarket have figured out how to recode used clusters with various software, but there's no way a dealer will or can do this.

Option 1: Get BMW to good-will you a new cluster, such things like you pay labor they supply a new cluster (people have done it so it can be done!) or % off cluster and you pay labor.

Option 2: Clusters can be recoded, but the IKE milage & VIN must match the LCM milage & VIN or else you will get a tamper dot.
(im not sure on the rules of a used cluster, but i've heard mileage might need to be higher than the current) im not 100% on that, since it can be coded.

Some techs use Carsoft or PAsoft to work on clusters IIRC.

Option 3: No cluster...happy kids.

And if the keep saying it can't be coded, then my swapped cluster is imaginary.

Side Note: Can you explain whats wrong with the cluster? Needles not work or bad pixels??

u can swap and recode. 2000-2003 uses low kombi. u can buy mine for 100.00 plus shipping. look on my for sale forum genuine bmw parts. thats the cheapest route. bmw will charge 150 for the recode but i would recommend using an indy mechanic. 2004-2006 uses hi kombi. make sure whatever year u have to use the right cluster so all the lights and gauges work

incorrect, this is a sure fire scam. yeah you can recode it, buy mine!

1999-2006 v8 engines uses high version, 1999-2006 i6 with SA555 on board computer or SA 609 Navigation Professional in US use high version, all i6 have low version.

2004-2006 i6 and v8 uses different instrument cluster than 1999-2003 due to xdrive and addtion of 6 speed auto transmission in v8.

so no they are not the same

all clusters can be wiped and cleared like a new cluster, and then using readily available tools you can have it re-coded to your vehicle.
