Does insurance cover mods?

Anyone know if car insurance covers all these great mods we're all doing? It would be a bummer to get in a fender-bender and have to buy running boards, trailer hitch, Dinan exhaust, etc. all over again!
I've heard the Geico does... not sure about my Allstate policy though.

Not 100% sure, but I think you need to notify them or have receipts for them to cover them.

Call your agent and ask them to verify in writing with the underwriter what is and isn't covered. You might have to provide pictures of the mods to your agent and/or have a rider added to your policy.

(My family business has been running an independent insurance agency for over 60 years)

Most should be covered, especially the mods that are things like OEM running boards, hitch, etc.

Now if you did some sort of custom mod, such as angel eyes in an 00-03, they may tell you that all they will cover is the replacement of the headlights with the OEM units.

Check with your insurance agent to be sure.

I got into an accident with my 04 4.4.
I had 4.8is front bumper rear spoiler and dinan exhaust. so when i brounght this up to him the insurance adjuster said. An changes that are made to the vehichle like the 4.8 front bumper as long as it is oem will be paid for and replaced. But stuff thats not oem like the dinan exhaust you have to show reciepts for it and they will cover it. So as far as my insurance company is concerned yes they paid for it all.

I agree with gresch, you should call your agent and/or insurance company to verify. In my case, my agent had to take pictures and draw up a separate list of all my mods. It was not enough to just keep receipts of my mods, as I was told. And as it turns out, the extra mods costed me an extra $20 buck per every 6 months.

Well thats a long story. But i will make it short.
First it was Allstate. and they agreed to pay for it all. with the mods when the adjuster came (Allstate was the guys insurance company that hit me.) But then the guy that was at fault got out of the hospital right after the appraisal was done by allstate and said he wasnt at fault. So allstate called me and said they were going to have to investigate and get a police report before they pay for anything and admit fault and if their client is at fault they will cover everything. But this process will take up to 1 month and they will not start working on my car until then. So basically i am with no X5 for over a month while they investigate.

So i called my insurance told them what was going on and they said to put the claim through my policy and then they will go after allstate and get the money back for the repairs. So i went that route so i wouldnt have to wait any longer. My company is called The Hartford. so when they showed up to do the appraisal they told me the same thing all oem mods are covered no questions asked the dinan exhaust which was also damaged i would have to show a recieot and they would cover it which they did.

So basically both companies the Hartford and Allstate were willing to cover everything and told me the same things.

Very good to know... thanks.

I wonder how they'd feel about Euro clears. They're OEM, just not US-spec OEM...

the way they will handle euro clear lights is that they will pay you for the oem us lights and then you have to work it out with the autobody to order the euros instead of the US spec for your car. But they will definately give you the money to replace the lights.
