I believe the PCM does detect inclines, and combined with driver inputs for throttle and brakes it then uses pre-programmed logic to hold gears accordingly. That's actually pretty standard on automatics these days. I find it helps with braking on steep decents, but selecting first or second manually works better on really steep hills.
