High gas prices..how about regular?

Anybody think it's ok to put regular in a 4.4i X5 since gas prices are going higher and higher?

i tried 2 tanks in my 06 4.4.seemed to run the same but my in town fuel mileage went from 19-20mpg to 14-15 mpg.so the extra cost of the 91 and the drop in mpg with regular might balance itself out...we are paying about 5$ a gallon here in alberta..

I had a hunch it's a bad math to do so, when I switched to premium non-brand like Costco/Safeway for a month and loosing about 1mpg.

let see, say you loose 2mpg going from 16mpg to 14mpg from 87octane to 92 octane, but save the diff in price of $3.73 compare to $3.95 (Seattle price at the moment).

*** 2/16 x 100% is negative saving of 12.5%, negative saving since you loose mileage

*** ($3.95-$3.73)/$3.95 yield a positive saving of 5.9%

So it doesn't save money to switch from 92 to 87 unless you:
1) don't loose mileage (wonder if it's even possible if you drive like grandma?)
2) price of gas goes down to $1.5.

How do you get 19-20mpg around town? I get about 15 in my 2006 4.4i that just hit 20k miles yesterday.

I switched 4 tanks ago to regular. I actually am getting better mileage. And I can't explain it. We went on a 600 mile round trip drive this last weekend, I computed my mileage and it was 26mpg for freeway. I was kind of blown away. I asked at the station I go to and they use 10% ethanol in the Premium but not in the Regular...

that is ass backwards. There is your answer, ethanol takes 24% more fuel to go the same distance, so 10% would answer why you are getting better mileage with regular NON ethanol. In MO it is the other way around. Reg gas has Ethanol (not advertised) and Prem is real gas!!!!

Here in FL, and back in western NC, I haven't been able to find a station of any brand that doesn't have the "10 % ethanol" on any grade pump.

My forays with 89 and 87, have all been on day long trips where that '< than recommened' is run through the tank in less than one day. No noise or 'knock'. And, both of my personal record mileage tanks, (mid 500 miles), came with gas less than premo, fwiw. All anecdotal, imo.

Though retired, I am not a cheapskate, and the less than premo trip uasge was simply a test. I doubt the ~10 year old 3.0 IL 6 'cared',
esp cruising along at 70-85 mph.

"Gasoline" is a hot button here in the Colonies, imo. People will drive miles to save a nickel or dime per gallon, and many people I know exhibit very few 'economical' methods or effort. Some do reduce driving when gas staggers up; and the mental sensitive points are obivous: eg 4 bucks a gallon, etc. When it finally gets to $5, and stays there awhile, there were be ubiquitous 'news' articles on 'how to save', 'which car' to chase, etc.

The US has been the lucky benefactor of less expensive gasoline, compared to most modern socities, for a long time, mostly due to less draconian taxes here. The party is getting late, and 'we' have done little to modify our usage. But, I could be throwing stones at the glass house I inhabit, as most of us do, too...

PS: very interesting, Buzzcut! Sorry to ramble off the current topic.

No body is calling anybody cheapskate

It's just the math for me is not there, just passed my fav Chevron station last night in Redmond WA,
87 $3.79
89 $3.87
92 $3.95

A mere 8-cent going from 92 to 89 saving per gallon, maybe if you drive like Wally does you can save a litte bit but that overall gas bill will be huge anyway you slice it.

This X5 keeps me busy with maintenance works as it is, I am not about to add another thing to my list, that's at least worth 8-cent a gallon to me.
